Why Leaders at the Star City Center for the Arts in Roanoke Say Community-Based Studios Matter More Than Ever

Why Leaders at the Star City Center for the Arts in Roanoke Say Community-Based Studios Matter More Than Ever Nestled in the Roanoke Valley of Virginia, a long-standing ballet school is expanding its vision and inviting the community to forge a deeper connection to the arts than ever before. As the Star City School of Ballet continues to thrive in the trendy city center, it is evolving alongside the new Star City Center for the Arts , a shared home that celebrates movement, visual art, music, and multidisciplinary creative work in a community-based setting.  The way both spaces thrive is indicative of how community-based studios have grown beyond just places to hold classes. It all comes at a time when affordable creative spaces, arts access, and meaningful in-person connection can be difficult to find. “This is vital infrastructure for artists, families, educators, and emerging creative entrepreneurs,” explains Star City Managing Director Ana Elisa Martinez de la Peña. “We are work...

Designing More Than Jewelry: Marlene Haase on Creativity, Business and Leadership

Designing More Than Jewelry: Marlene Haase on Creativity, Business and Leadership Talent may open a door, but building a career requires something more. For jewelry designer Marlene Haase, succeeding in New York has meant learning to combine creativity with persistence, leadership—and an understanding of the business behind design.   “When I moved to New York, my ambition was to really thrive as a designer and build a career for myself,” Haase says. She moved to New York after Parsons School of Design selected her for its prestigious MFA Fashion Design and Society program and awarded her a Dean’s Merit Scholarship. She also received a scholarship from the German Academic Scholarship Foundation (Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes) in recognition of her talent and to support the further development of her career. current hair routine

current hair routine Hi friend! Here’s a list of all of my hair care faves and the full routine! While I try to choose natural and organic options as much as possible, with my hair care, I’ve kind of swung a little in the opposite direction. Below is a mix of the most natural organic stuff you can find… and the opposite. Balance, baby. Wash routine: I used to only wash my hair once a week. After visiting the Korean head spa and having my scalp scanned, I’ve changed my ways lol. I wash it twice a week now. Shampoo and conditioner: Nexxus I have thick hair and I’ve been using this Nexxus shampoo and conditioner for years. I want a THICK conditioner, not one that feels like water. *Once a week, I use my products from Korea , but I’ve been trying to make them last. Everything is linked here . Every other wash, I add in a mask. This mask and this mask are my two favorites. If I’m feeling extra, before my shower, I’ll mist my hair with water, add in the mask, and Saran Wrap it aro...

9.11 Friday Faves

9.11 Friday Faves Hiiii! Happy Friday! What are you up to this weekend? We have a family dinner, Liv and I have a volunteer event for NCL, and I’m subbing a barre class. I hope you have a lovely and relaxing weekend ahead! Some pics from lately: Lola in the dryer…. (Whenever I do laundry, she runs into the laundry room to hunt for more socks to eat. She’s eaten two.. that we know of. So, I’ve been watching her like even more of a hawk than usual. This dog, I tell ya.) A javi sighting!! We always say it’s good luck when we see javelina, and one night driving home, we saw 12! We sat in our cars and watched them eat for a while. Fishing with the fam at Tanque Verde Ranch. EJ was the only one who caught a fish (a tiny one!) but it was a very exciting moment. Pool day with P and a friend at La Paloma: For now, i’s time for the weekly Friday Faves roundup! This is where I share some of my favorite finds from the week and around the web. I always love hearing about your faves, to...

The Napkin Fold That Makes a Dinner Table Look Considered

The Napkin Fold That Makes a Dinner Table Look Considered There is a moment, just before guests sit down, when a table either looks arranged or looks assembled. The plates are the same in both cases. The glasses are the same. What usually separates the two is the napkin — the one element most of us treat as an afterthought and drop beside the fork on the way to the kitchen. It is a small thing that carries a surprising amount of weight. A folded napkin is the only object on the table that shows a decision was made. Everything else has to be there; the napkin has to be placed . Why the napkin became the finishing touch The habit is older than the dinner party. In sixteenth-century European courts, folding linen was a genuine craft, closer to sculpture than to housekeeping, and elaborate folds were part of the spectacle of a banquet. By the nineteenth century the display had calmed down into something more practical, and the fold shrank to a manageable set of shapes that a household ...
