How Energy Medicine Solves Burnout: Holistic Healer Birgitta Visser’s Groundbreaking Approach

Feeling tired and having trouble getting motivated to work? If so, you’re not alone.

The Hill reports that Americans are currently experiencing burnout at an “all-time high.” Twenty-four percent of workers feel they have more work than they can complete during regular work hours, and 66 percent long to change jobs.

“Burnout is a debilitating state of mental, emotional, and physical exhaustion that can have profound effects on our overall well-being,” holistic healing practitioner Birgitta Visser, founder of Power Soul Healing, explains. “We may feel immense pressure and responsibility to keep working, to pay the bills and meet external expectations, but this comes at a steep cost. Burnout can lead us down a dark path of depression, unhealthy coping mechanisms, and a general sense of apathy and disconnection from ourselves.”

According to Visser, doing energy work can help individuals address the negative effects of burnout and replenish themselves, often without costing a penny.

Burnout stems from a problematic mindset

Since Visser herself has experienced burnout, she takes the condition seriously. “When I suffered from burnout, I became depressed,” she remembers. “I lived on autopilot, started eating bad food, let my hair go, ditched the gym, and kept working like an idiot. I felt a responsibility toward my job instead of toward myself.”

For Visser, that’s the crux of the problem. “I understand being afraid that you won’t be able to pay the bills,” she says. “Society has conditioned us to feel that way by design. Our salaries are the drug our employers give us to keep us firmly rooted in the system, which often results in us giving up on our dreams and aspirations. Our mental health and well-being are important. If you get run over by a bus tomorrow, God forbid, you’ll be replaced in the space of several weeks, as the company will survive and keep going. Through our experiences, we come to understand that we are deserving of a better life, and we don’t have to take it all lying down. We may also overwhelm ourselves thinking we are responsible for everything due to deeper issues or unresolved traumas — things we may not even be consciously aware of. When we push ourselves relentlessly, neglecting self-care and our own needs in the process, it’s like we’re riding a horse while gripping the reins far too tightly — we’re trying to exert control, but it’s a futile and draining effort, causing nothing but suffering.”

As Visser explains, however, this mindset can be replaced with a healthier outlook. “We need to break free of that conditioning,” she says. “We need to stop overthinking, shift our mindset, and take time to breathe. The universe will always provide for us if we let go of the reins, simply allowing ourselves to be in the flow.”

Burnout is trying to teach you something

Rather than avoid or suppress feelings of burnout, Visser encourages people to embrace them as a “beautiful teacher” and a “messenger” that “invites us to go deeper and find a new way of being.”

“We need to hit pause, breathe, and re-evaluate our lives,” she says. “Everything in life is an experience meant to be felt. No matter what you’re going through, you are fundamentally safe and whole. So ask yourself: What are you running from? What is this trying to teach you? How can you make amends?”

Engaging in energy work plays a key role in this process, helping people reclaim their power and their lives.

How energy work addresses the root causes of burnout

“We are energy, period,” Visser says. “We are alchemists and have the power to shift that energy, which means shifting our mindset to help transform our lives. Energy moves as long as we move. Rather than remaining rooted in the same spot, rolling around in the same conditioned crap we have become so accustomed to, we need to snap out of our programming and change our thinking to change our lives.”

While Visser herself specializes in light language healing, which uses sound frequencies and vibrations to unlock new states of consciousness, she emphasizes that the exact method someone uses isn’t important. “It doesn’t matter if we go to the gym or walk our dogs, whether we do one form of energy work or another,” she says. “Whatever speaks to our soul is what’s most important.”

Other common approaches to energy work include meditation, breathwork, yoga, pilates, tai chi, qi gong, Reiki, and dance. Scientific studies have proven the benefits of many of these practices for both mental and physical well-being.

“As we start to prioritize ourselves through balance, rest, and listening to our own needs, the weight begins to lift,” Visser explains. “From this place of greater inner alignment, we can make empowered choices and create a life that truly sustains us — in mind, body, and soul.”

We can also start to think about our circumstances differently.

“By shifting our mindset and trusting that the universe will support us, we can begin to loosen our grip and breathe more easily,” Visser explains. “This isn’t about giving up responsibility, but rather taking responsibility for our own well-being first and foremost. When we fill our own cup, we’re better equipped to show up in the world and fulfill our lives, our duties from a place of groundedness and inner peace.”

Trust yourself, do the work, and live the life of your dreams

For those who are currently suffering from burnout, Visser advises taking responsibility combined with a healthy dose of self-compassion.

“If you’re struggling with burnout, know that you already possess everything you need to recover,” Visser says. “You have the power within you to break free. Embrace your inner strength, do the work, and breath by breath, take back your energy and wellbeing. You and the universe are dance partners, gliding together across life’s grand ballroom. No one is going to save you from yourself but you, so be the super-caped hero of your own story. You are the captain of your own ship; you chart the course of your life. Your health and happiness are worth fighting for, so take back your power and blow life into your dreams, rather than allowing them to remain that dream, a little dream in your head.”
