Shoppers Abandon Black Friday Carts for One Surprising Reason

Shoppers Abandon Black Friday Carts for One Surprising Reason

Black Friday brings huge traffic spikes every year, yet plenty of retailers watch potential sales disappear at the final step. The surprise isn’t that people compare prices (they always have). The real issue is that shoppers leave when buying becomes harder than expected.

Research shows this isn’t a small problem. Baymard Institute estimates that the average online shopping cart abandonment rate is close to 70%, which makes abandoned carts one of the biggest revenue leaks in e-commerce.

So, what’s driving that number during Black Friday?

The biggest deal-breaker isn’t price. It’s checkout friction.

Most retailers assume shoppers abandon their carts after spotting a better discount elsewhere. Price matters, sure. Yet studies consistently point to checkout problems as the bigger reason.

According to a statistics report by SellersCommerce, a B2B eCommerce solution provider, 48% of shoppers abandon their purchase after seeing extra costs like shipping, taxes, or fees. Another 26% leave after being required to create an account, and 22% quit because delivery is too slow.

That means shoppers already wanted the product, but something during checkout changed their minds. Common friction points include:

  • Surprise shipping charges
  • Complicated checkout forms
  • Mandatory account registration
  • Limited payment methods
  • Slow-loading checkout pages
  • Security concerns
  • Unclear delivery estimates

Note that during Black Friday, every extra click gives shoppers another reason to leave.

Black Friday shoppers are planning earlier than ever

Online stores used to think Black Friday was one weekend, but that’s no longer true. Experian, a multinational data broker and consumer credit reporting company, reports that holiday shopping has stretched across several weeks. During the 2025 season:

  • 45% of shoppers planned to start before November.
  • 84% had already begun holiday shopping by Thanksgiving weekend.
  • 62% expected to continue shopping into December.

That longer buying cycle changes shopper behavior. Instead of making impulse purchases, people spend days comparing:

  • Prices
  • Shipping costs
  • Reviews
  • Return policies
  • Payment flexibility

By checkout, they’ve already invested time researching. A confusing checkout experience becomes the final reason to walk away.

Shoppers expect speed, convenience, and trust

One interesting takeaway from Experian’s latest Black Friday outlook is how technology has changed buying habits. The report highlights that during the 2025 holiday season:

  • 89% of consumers used AI in some part of their shopping process.
  • 42% used AI specifically for gift shopping.
  • AI-generated shopping traffic converted 31% better than traditional traffic.
  • Mobile devices generated 56.4% of online holiday revenue.

That creates higher expectations. People arrive at checkout after AI recommendations, comparison sites, and dozens of product reviews. They expect the buying process to match that convenience.

If checkout slows them down, many simply leave.

As Imperva, an American cybersecurity software and services company, explains, security concerns, complicated purchasing steps, unexpected costs, and forced registration remain four of the biggest contributors to ecommerce cart abandonment. Those issues become even more visible during high-volume shopping events like Black Friday.

That simple idea explains millions in lost ecommerce revenue every holiday season

Why discounts alone don’t solve cart abandonment

Many brands respond by offering deeper discounts. That helps attract clicks, but it doesn’t fix checkout.

A shopper who has already added products to their cart has shown buying intent. Losing them over a hidden shipping fee or a slow payment page is completely different from losing someone who never intended to purchase.

Experienced e-commerce teams usually focus on reducing friction before increasing discounts. For an online store like ShopMinx, beyond discounts, certain improvements are implemented to keep shoppers until checkout, including:

  • Showing shipping costs early to remove unpleasant surprises
  • Displaying trust badges to build confidence before payment
  • Supporting multiple payment methods to match customer preferences
  • Speeding up mobile checkout, as most holiday purchases now happen on mobile
  • Displaying accurate delivery dates to reduce uncertainty

Small improvements across several checkout steps can recover significant revenue.

Mobile shopping leaves little room for mistakes

Black Friday shopping has become increasingly mobile. It is projected to drive 63%+ of Cyber Monday purchases, up from 55% two years earlier (Hostinger, citing NRF data). Experian reports that “consumers move seamlessly between online research, mobile browsing, and in-store purchases,” but mobile generated over half of online holiday revenue during the 2025 shopping season.

Mobile shoppers have less patience. A checkout page that works fine on desktop may become frustrating on a phone. Common mobile issues include:

  • Tiny form fields
  • Slow page loading
  • Payment errors
  • Difficult coupon entry
  • Poor navigation

A few seconds of delay can be enough for someone to close the browser and buy somewhere else.

“Our ecommerce UX benchmark shows that many sites are still including too many form fields in their checkouts — degrading the overall user experience.” – Edward Scott, Research Lead, Baymard Institute

Trust still wins during Black Friday

People don’t spend money with stores they don’t trust, and that’s especially true during seasonal sales, where fake discounts and scam websites receive more attention.

Online stores build trust by making policies easy to find. That includes:

  • Clear return policies
  • Secure payment options
  • Transparent shipping costs
  • Verified customer reviews
  • Responsive customer support

For shoppers browsing stores like ShopMinx, those signals help reinforce confidence before checkout. Competitive pricing gets attention, yet transparent shipping information, secure payment methods, and a straightforward buying experience help turn browsing into completed orders.

Online retailers have less time than they think

“By the time Black Friday arrives, many consumers have already decided where they’ll shop — which means you’ll want to launch your seasonal promotions six to eight weeks before Black Friday,” according to Experian.  That means fixing checkout problems shouldn’t wait until holiday promotions begin.

Testing payment flows, improving page speed, and simplifying checkout usually produce better results than adding another discount banner. Many marketers spend weeks perfecting ads, but the checkout deserves the same attention.

The checkout experience decides the sale

Black Friday doesn’t end when someone adds an item to their cart. That’s where the hardest part begins.

Research consistently points to the same conclusion: shoppers abandon carts mainly after encountering friction during checkout. Hidden costs, lengthy forms, slow pages, and trust issues stop purchases that were already close to completion.

E-commerce stores that simplify buying stand a better chance of converting seasonal traffic into revenue.

The lesson here is that winning Black Friday isn’t always about offering the biggest discount. It’s about making it easy for shoppers to finish what they already wanted to buy.

Discover The World’s Smallest “Mountain” – The Mount Paltry

Discover The World’s Smallest “Mountain” – The Mount Paltry Move over Everest, there’s a new headline-grabber in town and it’s barely taller than you are. Mount Paltry has exploded on social media as the world’s smallest mountain , a tiny bump in Australia that has become internet-famous precisely because it looks… well, not very mountain-like at all. In a world obsessed with extreme hikes and record-breaking peaks, this modest mound has captured global attention by doing the exact opposite: being proudly underwhelming. Where on Earth Is Mount Paltry? Mount Paltry is described in viral posts as a miniature mountain in Australia, rising only a few metres above the surrounding land. It’s usually shown as a small, rounded rise in an otherwise flat landscape the kind of bump you might expect to call a hill, or even “just a bit of ground,” rather than a mountain. That’s exactly why people love it: the contrast between the dramatic title “world’s smallest mountain” and the very ordinar...

Glamorous Plus-Size Wedding Guest Dresses in Beautiful Styles

Glamorous Plus-Size Wedding Guest Dresses in Beautiful Styles Did you know that over 67% of women in the U.S. wear a size 14 or larger? Yet, despite the demand, the fashion industry has been slow to provide elegant, well-fitting, and on-trend plus- size wedding guest dresses. Many women face limited choices, ill-fitting designs, and outdated silhouettes that fail to highlight their curves. Shopping for the perfect dress can feel like navigating a minefield either the options lack style, the fit is off, or the available dresses don’t align with the formality of the event. For years, plus-size women have been told to “hide” their curves instead of celebrating them. Traditional formalwear often lacks the structure, comfort, or aesthetic appeal needed to make plus-size wedding guests feel just as glamorous as their straight-size counterparts. The frustration of sifting through uninspiring racks, struggling with restrictive fabrics, or settling for ill- proportioned designs is all too fami...
